WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau has named its new police chief.
Deputy Chief Matthew Barnes, a 23-year veteran of Wausau PD, will take over when Ben Blivin leaves for a job in the private sector in September.
Barnes, a graduate of UW-Stevens Point, has worked for Wausau PD since March 2020. During that time he’s been a Patrol Officer, Special Investigations Officer, Detective, Patrol Lieutenant, Community Resource Unit Lieutenant, Patrol Captain, Detective Captain, and Deputy Chief.
“I’m proud of being a part of securing some semblance of justice for victims,” said Barnes via a press release from the city. “But every investigation is truly a team effort, and I couldn’t have done that without teams of outstanding individuals working together to solve these crimes.” Barnes also credits time working with community organizations and building relationships as key factors in his leadership development.
Police and Fire Commission President William Harris says Barnes leads with integrity and compassion. He also noted Barnes’ commitment to the service and betterment of our community. “I have no doubt he will continue to exhibit that same community-minded focus as he creates a new path for success at the Wausau Police Department in his new role as Wausau Police Chief,” added Harris.
Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg says Barnes is also known for his commitment to solving the complex issues facing the city. “Barnes has been leading the charge on critical projects from the citywide facility and public event safety to ensure our community has access to information on employee wellness and development.”
Barnes will begin his new duties on September 1st. A formal swearing-in will be scheduled shortly.
