WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Nothing like going out on top.
Fat Joe’s Pizzeria in Wausau was named the best place in Wisconsin to get a New York-style Pizza, according to a study by the Washington Post published on Thursday.
But don’t expect to try a slice of that thin-in-the-center, thick-at-the-edge goodness anytime soon, as the news comes three weeks after the owner announced he was closing the restaurant.
According to the Post, they analyzed Yelp reviews for thousands of pizza restaurants nationwide to come up with the state-by-state ranking for six different styles of pizza. Fat Joe’s features several five-star reviews on its Yelp page, but the news hasn’t caught up to them yet as the restaurant is still listed as open for business.

The same survey lists Ropa’s in Rib Mountain as the #4 Chicago-style pizza in the state. No other Central Wisconsin restaurants made the list.
Rankings were limited to “small chain” restaurants, meaning big names like Pizza Hut or Topper’s were not eligible. The formula also took into account ratings, the number of reviews, and the number of reviews that mentioned a particular style of pie such as New York, Chicago, or Tavern.
Restaurants around Madison and Milwaukee dominated the rankings, which you can see for yourself by clicking here.
