The Wausau Water Works Commission will consider a proposal to accelerate both the substantial and final completion dates for the utility’s Granular Activated Carbon drinking water filtration system.
According to materials provided in Tuesday’s agenda packet doing so would add about $303,000 to the project costs, but would bring savings elsewhere.
The utility has been using the resin filtration system as a temporary fix to remove PFAS contamination to below 20 parts per trillion (PPT). The GAC system is expected to bring those levels down to non-detectible levels- which is expected to become the national recommendation for drinking water in the near future from the US EPA.
The resin has already been replaced once. By moving the date up, the utility could avoid a third replacement.
Tuesday’s meeting begins at 1:30 PM at City Hall. The agenda also includes discussion and possible action about a lead pipe replacement ordinance.
