WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Marathon County man accused of having more than 1,200 grams of meth in his vehicle will have a one-day trial next month.
James Newton will face a 12-person jury on October 4th for a single count of possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver. Officers say he had a garbage bag full of smaller bags that contained measured amounts of the drug.
The drugs were discovered following a single-vehicle crash last winter which occurred along Highway 29 in the Town of Frankfurt. Investigators say the 41-year-old may have tried to hide the bag behind the front driver’s side tire of the vehicle to keep it out of sight. Officers observed the bag was undisturbed, suggesting it was placed there after the crash.
Three additional counts of possession of meth with the intent to deliver have been dismissed in the case. Should Newton be found guilty of the fourth count, he would face up to 40 years in prison and a fine of $100,000. The count does come with a repeat modifier, which could increase the penalties as well.
He is being held at the Dodge Correctional Institute in Waupun until the trial.
