SCHOFIELD, WI (WSAU) — Schofield’s Water and Sewer Commission has approved $80,000 in bonds to help residents replace lead service lines.
Leaders approved the borrowing on Tuesday. According to the ordinance, plans call for bonds to be issued in May of 2024, with the city using money on hand to cover any expenses that may come up before the bonds are sold.
Public Works Director Mark Thuot says it’s part of a process encouraging residents who live in areas where the city has previously replaced the public side to get their side replaced as well.
The measure now goes to the full council for consideration next week. Mayor Kregg Hoehn said the move will not require property owners to replace their pipes.
Thuot says the city has confirmed at least 60 lead service lines are still in use in the city. There are likely additional lead lines still in service that aren’t accounted for.
