Wausau, WI (WSAU)- The Milwaukee Brewers were unable to capitalize yesterday to seal the win and celebrate the NL Central Division Title. The Miami Marlins beat the Brewers 5-4 at LoanDepot Park.
Milwaukee started to rally in the 6th inning, due to a game-tying 3-run homer by Carlos Santana. They were not able to keep the momentum going though, and was an overall tough day for Milwaukee.
The Brewers starter, Brandon Woodruff allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in five innings. He did strike out 6 and only allowed 2 walks. The Marlins though, smashed a first-pitch slider out to the left for 3 runs and a game-leading homer. By the 4th inning, they tacked on another run bringing the lead up to 4. Hoby Milner relieved Woodruff in the 6th after he threw 87 total pitches.
Joel Payamps could not control the mound the way he wanted at the start of the 8th. He issued a leadoff walk to the Marlins’ Jake Burger. After this mishap, Bryan De La Cruz was at the plate and singled to the right. Payamps tried a crazy pitch that ended up allowing Garret Hampson of the Marlins to score from third. Andrew Chafin came in to finish up for Payamps.
Carlos Santana had his 300th homerun, making him the 10th switch-hitter in MLB history to hit that many homers. Christian Yelich earned a milestone of his own by hitting his 1500th infield single. He is the 4th player in franchise history to have at least 3 100-run seasons after 2 run nights in Miami Friday.
The 2 teams face off today as the Brewers look to take the series at 12:40 P.M.
