WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – A recent “60 Minutes” episode that aired on Sunday reported that American taxpayers are “subsidizing” Ukraine’s economy and funding all of Ukraine’s first responders and farmers.
“American taxpayers are financing more than just weapons. We discovered the U.S. government’s buying seeds and fertilizer for Ukrainian farmers… and covering the salaries of Ukraine’s first responders—all 57,000 of them,” CBS News stated. “That includes the team that trains this rescue dog, named Joy, to comb through the wreckage of Russian strikes looking for survivors.”
According to a recent Pew Research Center poll, over half of Americans (47%) believe that the United States is either giving Ukraine the right amount of aid (31%) or not enough (16%) as the conflict there rages on. In contrast, 28% of respondents believe that the United States is supporting Ukraine too much.
“And the U.S. also funds the divers who we saw clearing unexploded ammunition from the country’s rivers—to make them safe again for swimming and fishing,” the segment continued. “Russia’s invasion shrank Ukraine’s economy by about a third. We were surprised to find that to keep it afloat, the U.S. government is subsidizing small businesses.”
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Monday that US-made Abrams tanks have arrived in Ukraine, according to Reuters.
“Good news from Minister (of Defense Rustem) Umerov. Abrams are already in Ukraine and are being prepared to reinforce our brigades,” he said on the Telegram messaging app.
He didn’t say how many tanks were expected to arrive. Ukraine had a high demand for the jet-powered American tanks before Washington ultimately offered more than 30 of them in January. Several European countries have previously sent dozens of Leopards and Challengers produced in Germany.
Admiral Viktor Sokolov, the head of Russia’s Black Sea navy, is alleged to have died in Friday’s missile attack on Sevastopol by the Ukrainian military, according to the Independent U.K.
He was one of the 34 people killed after a missile struck the headquarters, the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces announced on social media on Monday. They added that 105 additional soldiers had been injured.
Russia hasn’t responded to the claims yet and has only reported one serviceman as missing due to the attack.
