MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers’ pitching struggled on Saturday night as they fell to the Chicago Cubs 10-6.
The Brewers (91-70) rested their top starting pitchers, and Chicago (83-78) spent the top of the first hitting home runs off of Eric Lauer, who was making his first big league appearance since May 20.
Christopher Morel started the game off hot, blasting a 431-foot drive over the wall in left field on the third pitch of the game. Before Gomes connected for a grand slam home run, Lauer walked three of his next four batters. Patrick Wisdom hit a right-center home run two batters later.
Willy Adames would lead a three-run rally against Jordan Wicks in the bottom of the first with a two-run double. Before the Cubs took Wicks out of the game in the second after his struggles, Blake Perkins hit a two-run home run, and Carlos Santana added a tying solo drive.
Despite having two runners thrown out at the plate, the Cubs scored twice in the fourth to retake the lead. In addition to Bellinger’s run-scoring double, Ian Happ delivered an RBI single to break the tie.
Carlos Santana finished the game 1-2 with a home run, two walks, and two runs scored, while Adames went 3-5 with two RBIs.
In four innings, Lauer gave up eight runs, nine hits, and four walks.
However, Jazz Chisholm hit his 19th home run of the season for the Miami Marlins in a 7-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night, giving the Marlins their fourth playoff berth in team history, eliminating the Cubs from postseason contention.
On Sunday afternoon, RHP Adrian Houser will take the mound for the Brewers while LHP Justin Steele pitches for the Cubs. The pregame begins at 1:35 p.m. on WSAU.
