STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — He’s not ready to let the cat out of the bag completely, but Mayor Mike Wiza says stay tuned for what could be a big announcement in the next few months.
Wiza was part of a recent trade mission to Europe. Where he brought state economic leaders to meet with a Belgian company that’s considering a site in the city’s industrial park for what would be their first North American location. Wiza says negotiations are continuing, but there’s reason for optimism.
“I think we are well on our way to having the first North American facility for [this] Belgian company in the City of Stevens Point,” said Wiza.
Wiza did not share the name of the company that he’s talking with, or what industry they are in. He did say that discussions with the company and state officials went well when they met during the trip.
“It seemed like a great idea to get the Governor and Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation in touch with these groups that we’ve already been working with- to have someone else tell [them] what a great facility we could have here in Central Wisconsin, in Stevens Point,” added Wiza.
It was the first time that Wiza had been involved with one of the Governor’s trade missions, which occur once or twice each year. He said it serves as a “cold call” to businesses to put the city and region on their map for potential future development.
Stevens Point has about 700 acres of land in its East Park Commerce Center that has been certified as “shovel-ready” by the state.
Other topics Wiza discussed with WSAU’s Mike Leischner include:
Start of video- trade trip to Europe
7:00- shared revenue and its impact on the city budget
12:20- UWSP homecoming and other area events
