WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg is expecting a hearty discussion on Tuesday regarding a proposed groundbreaking deadline extension for T Wall Enterprises, the developers of the Foundry on 3rd project in Downtown Wausau.
“It’s going to be a really exciting debate. None of our Alders have ever held back, so I expect some more of that. Obviously we will be talking through what our community [needs]. I’m ready to have a decisive decision on the deadline,” said Rosenberg.
Rosenberg says she’s made it clear that if the delay is approved she doesn’t want to see them coming back for a second delay next spring.
“I can’t even tell you how excitedly I’ve asked that question,” said Rosenberg, referring to her discussions with T Wall on if another delay will be needed if this one is approved. “I have asked multiple times in multiple ways and with varying degrees of politeness. My expectation is this is going to be it. [Another delay] is not outside the realm of possibility, but my expectation is that we get started [in June] if we vote on this.”
The Foundry on 3rd project was supposed to break ground by September 1st. T Wall missed that deadline, but the City Council chose to hold off on legal action while all three parties negotiated the extension.
Rosenberg says part of that negotiation was an agreement between the city and WOZ, who owns the property, over who should pay for a visit to the site from a soil remediation company. That was called off at the request of WOZ. “They showed up on the day, and the folks on site said ‘We will stop you here.’ We want to make sure that the contractor is paid for the work that they were supposed to do. We also think that it wasn’t us who called them off, so we would like our partners to be on the hook for that one.”
