The Wausau City Council is set to make a much-anticipated decision regarding the future of the Foundry on 3rd development at the former Wausau Center Mall site.
Alders will vote on an amendment to the development agreement which allows T Wall Enterprises to put off groundbreaking for the multi-level housing and retail development to June 1st, 2024, and completion to November 1st, 2025.
The original groundbreaking deadline passed on September 1st with no action, though the Council voted to instruct the city’s legal team to take no action while all sides worked out an acceptable extension.
The extension was approved by the economic development committee back in July.
At the center of the controversy is the timing of the project, with some on the council questioning T Wall’s commitment to the project due to the delay. Representatives from the company have refuted that, saying they remain committed and have already sunk a chunk of their own money into the development for items like electrical infrastructure. They also plan to start the permitting process soon, according to a mid-July update.
Tuesday’s City Council meeting is set for 6:30 and public comment is part of the agenda. The body is agendized for a closed session on the matter.
