WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – After the New York City Democratic Socialist Party held a pro-Hamas demonstration on Sunday in response to terrorist attacks against Israel that resulted in the deaths of more than one thousand people, including many women and children, four self-proscribed “socialist” legislators in Congress are keeping silent.
The demonstration was held in Times Square, and representatives Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Greg Casar, and Shri Thanedar did not answer several requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation and other media organizations regarding the event. According to the Israeli Defense Forces, more than 1,200 people have been killed so far, dozens have been abducted, and more than 5,000 rockets have been fired at Israel over the last few days.
Attendees of the NYC DSA event in Times Square brandished Palestinian flags and set fire to an Israeli flag, according to The New York Post. Democratic Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez released statements criticizing the New York City Democratic Socialist Party’s demonstration.
Governor Kathy Hochul, Representative Hakeem Jefferies, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams are just a few other Democratic figures in New York who spoke out against the event.
Rep. Tlaib released a statement on X supporting Palestine and the protesters not long after the attacks began, saying, “I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today, and every day. As long as our country provides billions in unconditional funding to support the apartheid government, this heartbreaking cycle of violence will continue.”
Rep. Cori Bush wrote a similar statement, saying, “As part of achieving a just and lasting peace, we must do our part to stop this violence and trauma by ending US government support for Israeli military occupation and apartheid.”
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre slammed the representatives for their comments, stating, “I’ve seen some of those statements this weekend, and we’re going to continue to be very clear. We believe they’re wrong, we believe they’re repugnant, and we believe they’re disgraceful.”
Other pro-Palestine events were held around the country, including one in Dearborn, Michigan, where hundreds of Palestinian supporters gathered to mourn those who have died fighting and civilians who have died in the crossfire as Israel continues to target Hamas military hideouts.

Far-left groups including Black Lives Matter of Chicago are also showing their support for Palestine by posting a photo showing a paratrooper with a Palestinian flag that stated: “I stand with Palestine.” The photo is in reference to Hamas paratroopers who were dropped into Israel on Saturday before killing and taking hundreds of Israeli civilians hostage.
