WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of firing a handgun as he was feeling officers following a fight at the M & R Bar is being held on cash bond.
Joseph Slater made an initial appearance Friday afternoon. The 42-year-old is facing four counts including recklessly endangering safety and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He’s also accused of receiving a stolen handgun.
Slater pled not guilty to a misdemeanor count of carrying a handgun into a premise that serves alcohol. He will enter a plea to the felony counts at a later date.

Investigators say Slater was part of a fight in the parking lot of the bar in late September. When officers arrived they noticed a man holding a gun and instructed him to drop it. The group scattered and officers heard a single gunshot.
Two weapons were recovered from the scene. One was found immediately after the incident and another was recovered during follow-up investigations. A review of security camera footage led officers to name Slater as a suspect, and he turned himself in two weeks later.
One of the guns was reported as stolen.
Judge Suzzane O’Neil also set several future court dates including an October 23rd preliminary hearing and November 16th pretrial conference. Slater is being held on a $50,000 cash bond. Should he post the money he would not be allowed to leave Marathon County and would not be allowed on any premise that serves alcohol, including M & R Station.
