MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The New York Mets may have decided on their top candidate to replace Buck Showalter as manager for the 2024 season.
People around the MLB believe the Mets have a “reasonable chance” to hire Craig Counsell away from the Brewers, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Counsell recently completed his seventh season as Milwaukee Brewers manager. The 53-year-old’s three-year contract signed in January 2020 will expire at the end of the month, making him a free agent.
The Brewers and Counsell discussed extensions during the season, but neither party was able to reach a deal.
Heyman stated in June that Brewers owner Mark Attanasio informed Counsell that the team would be open to offering him a multiyear contract, a one-year extension, or even “possibly” some time off to entice him to return.
With 707 victories under his belt, Counsell is the Brewers’ all-time winningest manager. He guided the team to five postseason berths, three NL Central championships, and a trip to the 2018 NLCS.
