STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Court proceedings have been reset against a Portage County man accused of causing significant injuries to a three-month-old child in 2022.
David Schmies was scheduled for trial in early November, but court records show his attorney pulled out of the case over the summer. A new defender was just assigned to the case ten days ago, leading a judge to cancel the trial.
A pretrial conference has been scheduled for November 20th.
Investigators say the 24-year-old caused numerous injuries to a three-month-old child, which likely occurred over several weeks. Those included a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain, and numerous broken ribs. Schmies had told doctors the baby fell off a bed, but the nature of the injuries suggests something more severe.
Other injuries to the child’s limbs may have been caused by twisting/yanking on them.

Schmies is free on a signature bond, which he initially refused to sign. He faces up to 40 years in prison if found guilty.
