City leaders in Wausau will consider funding for a plan to increase security at City Hall during Tuesday’s Finance Committee and Common Council meetings.
According to the Finance Committee packet, the low bid for the project came in at $231,470. Initial estimates had shown the plan would cost around $180,000, so city leaders will consider taking $68,000 from the general fund surplus to cover the rest.
The plan would include bulletproof barriers and a secure entrance, meaning the days of simply walking into City Hall and immediately going to your destination would be over. The City Clerk’s office would be relocated as part of the plan.
City leaders proposed the plan last spring, including former Police Chief Ben Bliven who called the situation an “emergency.” Mayor Katie Rosenberg also noted that she has had several people arrested in her office for making threatening statements. She also noted several incidents involving people sleeping in City Hall on the weekends when the building is closed
Tuesday’s discussion will begin with the Finance Committee meeting at 5:30 PM. The plan will then go to the full council at 6:30. Public comment will be part of the Council meeting.
