WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau’s Cafe 529 has been named one of three statewide finalists in the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation’s annual Main Street Makeover Contest.
Cafe 529 opened in the former La Prima deli location one year ago. Owner Tammy Baily tells WEDC she hopes to address space constraints such as lighting and layout to create new and expanded opportunities for remote work, community gatherings, educational seminars, and retail elements to draw customers to the business.
The winning business will work with staff and consultants to draw up plans for the makeover this winter. Work will be done in an “extreme makeover” style over two days next spring, with a public unveiling to follow.
The other finalists are Link’s Martial Arts in Mayville and YB Urban? of Ellsworth. A winner will be announced in early November.
Eligible businesses must belong to one of Wisconsin’s Main Street or Connect Communities. Eligible entries were judged based on their business plan and potential impact on their neighborhood.
