MERRILL, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Not having a place to live can be a huge challenge any day of the year, but especially as the temperature drops.
Hundreds of people in the Badger State battle homelessness and when you couple that with the heavy snow and bone-chilling temperatures of winter; it can be overwhelming.
At Merrill’s MAC Home, they already are seeing demand rising over just the last two months; to say nothing of the last week’s rain, frigid temperatures, and snow. “We are seeing an uprise now,” MAC Home Executive Director Theresa Anthony told WAOW-TV . “For the month of October we provided 200 safe nights of shelter compared to the previous months where we were at like 120, so we’re already seeing the influx of people coming in out of the cold.”
Catholic Charities run a shelter called Good Shepherd with similar features to MAC Home.
Staffing, for them, is something they are always trying to deal with.
“There’s fewer resources than ever in the greater community to help unhoused folks and so we definitely feel the pension,” said Advancement Director Rob Grover. “We definitely need both volunteers and financial resources to continue to do our work.”
