MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Chicago Cubs have hired Craig Counsell away from the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers, New York Mets, and Cleveland Guardians were all interested in Counsell. The 53-year-old spent was in high demand after nine years in Milwaukee, where he had a record of 707-625. In five of the previous six seasons, the Brewers made it to the postseason; in 2018, they nearly won the National League Championship Series in seven games.
According to Rosenthal, Counsell received a five-year contract worth over $40 million from the Cubs which will make Counsell the highest-paid manager in MLB history.
Counsell will replace Cubs manager and former player David Ross, who in his first two full seasons (2021 and 2022), the team went a combined 145-179.
