MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — A sanitary sewer overflow in Marshfield led to nearly one million gallons of untreated sewage leaking into McMillian Creek.
City workers and contract haulers immediately began pumping the creek and hauling the untreated sewage to the city’s wastewater treatment plant. The Wisconsin DNR has also stepped in to help the city mitigate the discharged sewage.
Residents are asked to avoid recreating in the area of McDill Creek between Becker Road and Staad Road. Officials emphasize that the leak did not impact the city’s drinking water supply, only surface water.
The leak was discovered Wednesday morning in a main that serves the northern 1/3rd of the city. Crews immediately began repairs and had the leak stopped by about 7 PM.
