WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Trial proceedings have been reset for a Cedarburg woman accused of stealing thousands from an elderly Weston woman while working as her power of attorney.
Ramona Bartell is facing theft of more than $10,000 in a business setting and theft of movable property after officials say she spent over $571,000 of the victim’s money for her own benefit.
Investigators say she purchased electronics and household items using the funds while she was listed as POA. She’s also accused of taking trips and paying for other personal expenses.
Bartell’s purchases “did not appear to benefit the victim,” according to police reports. The victim, who died earlier this year while in a Weston nursing home, had been declared incompetent.
The trial against Bartell was originally set for mid-October. Court records now show a series of hearings for mid-May and a five-day trial from June 3rd through the 7th.
She faces up to 16 years in prison and $35,000 in fines.
Another woman, Melissa Stark, was recently sentenced to restitution and probation for her role in the scheme.
