WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Many have responded to presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s comments on Tuesday stating that to safeguard national security, she would make it mandatory for all social media users to verify their identities.
“When I get into office, the first thing we have to do, social media accounts—social media companies, they have to show America their algorithms. Let Americans see why they’re pushing what they’re pushing. The second thing is every person on social media should be verified by their name,” Haley said.

Fellow presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy stated in response, “This is disgusting,” and that he is “a free speech absolutist.” X owner Elon Musk followed by posting, “Super messed up; she can stop pretending to run for president now.”
Musk has been a vocal supporter of free speech rights in the United States, going so far as to purchase the social media site X at a time when it was working with the federal government to stifle free expression.
The U.S. Supreme Court has provided unwavering protection for anonymous expression, which is a fundamental component of American free speech rights.
Two recent polls, one from the Morning Consult and another from the Trafalgar Group, show Haley currently in second place and third place, trailing former President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primary. Trafalgar has her polling at 15%, while the Morning Consult has her at 9%.
