STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Cold weather will soon be on the way and the Stevens Point Warming Shelter is already experiencing high demand.
Located in the basement of Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church, the shelter is a vital resource for the Stevens Point community, especially to people who do not have a home to call their own.
They have even added eight extra beds in the past year because of high demand, but they still need more. “We opened up one day early this season and we’re definitely hitting our record numbers again this year,” said Stevens Point Warming Shelter Coordinator Tiffani Mallory. “We’ve been at capacity most of the nights we’re open. We already did have to turn somebody away, thankfully it was a warm night.”
When they do have to turn someone away, they use every resource possible to try and find somewhere else for that person to find shelter.
Holy Spirit Parish in Stevens Point is taking donations for the shelter in their back parking lot area.
What they need most right now are hand warmers, gloves, mittens, hats and coats.
