WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A Wausau teacher’s turkey drive has passed a significant milestone.
Rob Hughes’ Wausau Area Food for Hope Turkey Drive assisted schools and organizations in filling their cars with turkeys and hams to distribute to people in need for Thanksgiving.
This year, more than 900 turkeys and hams were ordered, and more than $22,000 was contributed to make it happen, according to Hughes, a record for this initiative.
“It’s very humbling that we can help these families make sure they don’t miss out on Thanksgiving this year and that they have a meal and a turkey.” “I think it’s really generous that this community contributes every year,” says volunteer Ryan Oestreich.
Hughes agrees that the community’s support overwhelmed him.
This year, more than 20 schools and organizations, including the Women’s Community and the Elks Club, lined up to receive turkeys and hams.
