WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The man suspected of tailgating a vehicle on US 51 and then shooting at the family inside of it has requested to represent himself pro se with a standby attorney.
Bennie Green was in court on Tuesday where Judge Suzanne O’Neill ordered the state to deliver all of its discovery, or evidence, to Green in jail. He has also been ordered to undergo a competency evaluation.
Attorney Jay Kronenwetter has agreed to be on standby for Green, who is facing more than a dozen charges including one count of attempted homicide and multiple counts of recklessly endangering safety through the use of a dangerous weapon.
Green is accused of tailgating another vehicle as the two were driving north on US 51 in early October. According to the victim Green had been slowing down and speeding up, allowing their vehicle to pass and then tailgating. Green is then accused of driving alongside the victims and shooting twice into their vehicle.
One person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Green then led authorities on a chase that extended back into the Wausau area where he was finally arrested after a Lincoln County deputy disabled his vehicle.

Other charges against him include OWI causing injury and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. He also faces a single count of possession of methamphetamine.
Judge O’Neill has ordered Green to cooperate with the competency evaluation, which will be reviewed on December 20th. Green has requested a speedy trial. That request has not been addressed and will depend on the evaluation’s results.
The 41-year-old faces a possible life sentence if found guilty on the attempted homicide count alone. The remaining felony counts carry a maximum sentence of between 12.5 and 3.5 years in prison and fines.
