CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Before I discuss the curious case of Wesley Winters, let’s talk about Demi Minor of New Jersey.
Demi was born as Domitrius Minor, and is serving a jail term for killing his step-father. Demetrius now claims to identify as female, or Demi. New Jersey corrections officials, in their mistaken logic, housed Demi in a women’s prison – until he got two other inmates pregnant. Now he’s been moved to a secure housing unit at a youth prison.
Demi Minor’s case has become a cause celeb for liberals and the LGBTQ community. There’s a ‘Justice for Demi’ website. The ACLU has taken the case, arguing that since Demi feels like a woman, he should do his time in a women’s prison.
It turns out New Jersey has 27 trans prisoners – men, in women’s facilities. So long as they don’t impregnate their fellow inmates, their cases haven’t drawn much attention.
So now consider the Wisconsin case of Wesley Winters, a convicted sex offender. Winters was wanted on a parole violation for not registering a current address on the state’s sex offender registry. Winters is a biological male, who now appears to be a woman. The photograph released by the corrections department shows someone who presents as a female, with feminine facial features and female breasts.
Why is not registering as a sex offender a particularly serious violation in this case? Because Wesley Winters, someone who has a male’s name, could be living in an apartment next to you and your children, or next to a school or a daycare center, and unless the address was registered you might never know that the supposed woman who just moved in is a sexual predator and didn’t comply with his terms of release when paroled.
Wesley Winters should land back in jail. And let’s hope our Department of Corrections is smart enough not to house him with female inmates.
