WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – Late on Wednesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a serious warning regarding a string of powerful solar storms that are expected to begin tonight.
Solar storms and other activity, which were predicted to begin before the end of 2023, would be chaotic and possibly disastrous back in June, according to the NWS.
According to Fox Weather, a geomagnetic storm notice was issued by NASA and other space organizations on Thursday at 7 p.m. EST due to a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are violent jets of solar wind and plasma that began on November 27 and 28.
As of today, the NWS anticipates that the storm will only rank a G3 on the G1 (minor) to G5 (severe) scale. G3 is a “strong” storm that may increase drag on low-Earth orbit satellites and have an effect on low-frequency radio and satellite navigation.
Following several coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on Nov. 27 and 28, a Watch has been issued for a strong Geomagnetic Storm (G3) beginning 00 UTC Fri (7pm EST Thu). Auroras may be visible as far south as Illinois & Oregon Thursday night/early Friday morning. https://t.co/SqhAvUex6e pic.twitter.com/EijmICsU0e

Scientists have previously issued warnings that the approaching storm may affect bird migration patterns. While some planetary ecosystems would be disturbed by this, it wouldn’t be as sudden or catastrophic as G5.
