WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau District 3 Alder Tom Kilian has announced that he will not run for a third term on the Council.
Wausau Pilot and Review reports that Kilian has filed non-candidacy, meaning there will be at least two new faces on the City Council next year.
Kilian, a longtime activist with the group Citizens for a Clean Wausau, has advocated for environmental issues such as soil testing and remediation in Riverside Park and on Thomas Street.
In a statement to Pilot and Review, Kilian said “It has been, and continues to be, a tremendous honor to serve the great residents and neighborhoods on both sides of the river in District 3, Through their participation and perseverance, they have achieved impressive results on multiple policy fronts, and I have no doubt that the residents, together, will continue to pursue benevolent outcomes for our town and its people.”
He also recently tried to reduce pay for Alders and the Mayor, claiming that the city wasn’t transparent enough on certain issues. That came as part of a proposal to increase pay for the positions. Both proposals, the increase and decrease, failed.

All 11 of Wausau’s Alder seats are up for election in April 2024 along with the Mayor’s seat. Candidates can circulate their nominating papers between now and early January. Any primaries, if needed, will be contested in February.
Kilian is the first Alder to declare non-candidacy in Wausau. There are currently two candidates for Mayor; Incumbent Katie Rosenberg and District 4 Alder Doug Diny. A third resident has also expressed interest in running on social media.
