WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – President Joe Biden warned on Wednesday that if Congress blocks additional military aid from being given to Ukraine, American troops may be forced to fight Russian troops in Ukraine.
According to the Daily Mail, Biden strongly urged Congress to approve his request for tens of billions of dollars in military and economic help, claiming that Republicans were giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a present by delaying funding.
“It’s important to see the long run here. He’s going to keep going. He’s made that pretty clear. If Putin attacks a NATO ally if he keeps going, and then he attacks a NATO ally when we’ve committed as a NATO member to defend every inch of NATO territory, then we’ll have something that we don’t seek and that we don’t have today: American troops fighting Russian troops,” Biden stated during a press conference.

The Daily Mail further reported that Biden has requested the funds from Congress to support national security issues and the wars in Israel and Ukraine. Republicans on Capitol Hill, however, have rejected the idea; some have insisted that Biden secure the country’s southern border before anything else.
The appeal for additional military assistance comes after Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko told a Swiss media outlet that he agreed with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, who recently said that the war had “reached a stalemate” as Ukraine’s military has failed to regain any territory in recent weeks.
One Ukrainian soldier on the frontlines told the BBC last week that he felt the war was going nowhere, saying, “No one knows the goals. Many believe that the command simply abandoned us. The guys believe that our presence has more political than military significance. But we just did our job and didn’t get into strategy.”
“It’s a total nightmare. A year ago, I wouldn’t have said that, but now, sorry, I’m fed up,” the soldier continued.
According to a survey conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, around half of Americans believe that the nation is paying too much attention to Ukraine. Compared to 52% in October, only 45% now believe that US government aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia is excessive. Republicans seem to be the main source of this change: 59% of respondents now believe that too much money is being spent on aiding Ukraine, down from 69% in October.
A November Gallup poll also found that 64% of Americans say neither side is winning the war, a seven-percentage-point increase over the summer. When comparing the views of Republicans (62%) and independents (44%) from August 2022 when Gallup began asking about this war till November 2023, more respondents now say that the US is overly supportive of Ukraine.
