WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – As Republicans continue to decide who their challenger to face off against Democrat Senator Tammy Baldwin in 2024 will be, new polling suggests that voters have a clear choice on who they’d like to see run.
According to Public Policy Polling, which polled 503 likely Republican primary voters earlier this week, former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke holds a massive 45-point lead over businessman Eric Hovde. The poll also found that 65% of respondents knew of David Clarke (52%) and saw him favorably, compared to 13% with a negative opinion. Meanwhile, only 22% of respondents knew of Hovde.
The NRSC announced last week that Hovde would have their support if he were to run, and Clarke told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that groups like the National Republican Senatorial Committee “don’t understand” grassroots voters in the state, saying, “This race won’t be won trying to match Baldwin’s money. It will be won by pointing to her do-nothing record as a DC career politician and (with) an effective ground game.”
In terms of the presidential primary, Trump has gained major ground in Wisconsin, as well as nationwide, during the last six months. He now has 54% support, compared to Ron DeSantis’ 16%, Nikki Haley’s 15%, Chris Christie’s 5%, and Vivek Ramaswamy’s 4%.
Trump’s lead of 38 points more than exceeds the 16 points he had in the PPP poll from June. Since then, Haley’s support has increased by 10, and DeSantis’ has decreased by 9.
