WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The former Marshfield Municipal Clerk of Courts accused of skimming thousands of dollars in citation payments from the city may reach a plea deal with the state for theft charges in a business setting.
Susan Carlson was in a Wood County courtroom last week. Her defense team and the state announced that they have an agreement for a plea and punishment for the 69-year-old who currently faces three felony counts of stealing more than $10,000 from the city.
Details of the agreement were not discussed on the record during the hearing. A judge then set a plea and sentencing date for February 1st, 2024.
Carlson is accused of skimming as much as $70,000 from the city between 2015 and 2020. The missing funds were discovered after her retirement when the new Clerk noticed irregularities with the court’s ledgers.

According to investigators, most of the missing money came from citation payments such as parking tickets that were paid in cash.
Carlson had previously claimed that the evidence against her resulted from an unlawful search of her home. She also claimed that the prosecution had destroyed evidence that could prove her innocence and called for the case to be dismissed.
The current charges against her carry a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in prison. Carlson is free on a signature bond.
