Governor Tony Evers meets with students at Merrill High School.
MERRILL, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Merrill High School held an event for mental health awareness on Monday, drawing in many from across the state including Governor Tony Evers.
Even with his background in education, and years of experience in schools, Evers was blown away by the group of students. Evers said, “They want to work together with others to change something, having been in schools you know most of my life, that’s extraordinary, many times we see students kind of going through the classes, and they’re going and then they’re gone. These folks are working hard to correct things that exist right now.”
The students took advantage of this moment and put together a great assembly, and after held a discussion on the issues with mental health, something they usually don’t have a governor sitting in open, but this time, did.
Reggie Lahti, President of the Merrill Raise Your Voice Club said, “I think that it’s so important not just listening to adults about these things, but youth. We know the most about what youth are going through and I think that it’s so important he wants to hear what we have to say, and I think it means a lot to our cause that we’ve come that far.”
Governor Evers is excited for the future of the club and the state with this group of students.
The club has grown every year, now having over one-eighth of the entire school being a part of the club, and they are looking to get bigger.
