TOWN OF TOMAHAWK, WI (WSAU) — A man was pulled from the water on the Spirit River Flowage in the Town of Tomahawk.
Officials were called to the area just before 8 AM Friday to find the man in the water about 400 yards from shore. A nearby fisherman had tied a rope to the man to keep him afloat, and another good samaritan had walked out to the man with a canoe to assist in the rescue as well.
First responders were able to pull him from the water and take him to a nearby hospital to be evaluated for hypothermia.
Investigators determined that the man had been riding an ATV on the ice when it gave way and the vehicle sank. The man’s name was not released but officials said he was expected to make a full recovery.
No further information has been released. Unseasonably warm temperatures have made for unstable ice all across Central Wisconsin, and officials emphasize that no ice should be considered safe at this time.
