STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A Stevens Point man accused of causing significant injuries to a three-month-old child will be tried next summer.
David Schmies is scheduled to face a 12-person jury from June 17th through the 20th for one count of reckless injury. The charges came after a March 2022 incident in which a child was brought to a Stevens Point-area hospital with injuries including a swollen head. The child also wasn’t breathing properly and showed bruising.
Doctors later discovered numerous bone fractures throughout the child’s body. A CT scan also showed bleeding in the child’s brain. They believe the injuries came from abuse including twisting or pulling of limbs and squeezing, adding that the child showed no sign of having brittle bones.

The 24-year-old was previously scheduled for trial last November after rejecting a plea deal. If found guilty, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
Schmies returns to court on May 23rd for a final pre-trial conference.
