WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A former Wausau resident will avoid prison time for one count of child neglect in connection with the death of her infant son.
Shailey Huron was given ten years of probation with a one-year jail sentence that was imposed and stayed after pleading no contest to the felony count back in October.
The sentence means Huron will automatically serve one year of jail time if she violates the terms of her probation without a future court date. Additional terms of her probation include completing a parenting class, maintaining full-time employment or schooling, and absolute sobriety from drugs or alcohol.
She will not be allowed to be employed in a childcare setting. The terms of her probation will also be transferred to her current home in Texas.
Police say the boy’s death stemmed from a night of drinking and marijuana use by Huron and another man in 2020. Huron placed the three-month-old in bed with her and the man. She was doing so despite numerous warnings by a hospital nurse, a pediatrician, and a public health nurse that it was dangerous to share a bed with her child.
Autopsy results showed the boy died from asphyxiation associated with an unsafe sleeping environment.

The case was scheduled for a trial in October, but that was changed at the last minute when the sides announced they agreed on a plea deal. She had faced up to 25 years in prison and $100,000 in fines for the Class D Felony.
