WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – Top Hamas official Saleh Arouri was killed on Tuesday in an explosion in a suburb in Beirut, according to the Hezbollah group’s TV station in Lebanon.
The state-run National News Agency reported that the explosion, which claimed four lives, was carried out by an Israeli drone.
Izzat Al-Rishq, a spokesperson for Hamas, has said in a statement that al Arouri was killed in a “cowardly assassination” by Israel, adding such attacks “will not succeed in breaking the will and steadfastness of our people or undermining the continuation of their valiant resistance”.
Arouri led Hamas’s presence in the West Bank and was one of the founders of the organization’s terrorist wing, according to The New York Post. Even before the Hamas-Israel war broke out on October 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened to assassinate Arouri.
Israel has not provided a comment on the incident at this time.
