ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) — The state’s Department of Justice is investigating a fatal shooting during a police welfare check in Rothschild.
Officers were called to a home on Urban Street at about 9:45 Wednesday night. When they entered the residence a male subject ran into a bathroom with a firearm. He then ran into a bathroom, displayed a handgun, and turned the weapon on himself. Officers attempted life-saving procedures, but the man could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
No shots were fired by responding officers. All officers at the scene were wearing body cameras.
One officer is on administrative leave under agency policy.
Officers from Rothschild, Kronenwetter, and Everest Metro PD responded to the incident. Names of those involved have not been released, and the state Department of Justice will handle the investigation into the incident.
