SOUTH BEND, IN and MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A late power play goal helped the Badger men’s hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame to move into first place in the Big Ten Conference on Monday.
Charlie Stramel scored the go-ahead goal midway through the 3rd period. He one-timed a feed from Owen Lindmark past a sliding ND goalie for his third score of the season, but the game would not end smoothly for the Badgers.
Wisconsin spent five of the last ten minutes short-handed after Joe Palodichuk was handed a 5:00 major penalty and 10:00 game misconduct for cross-checking. The Fighting Irish managed just two shots on net during the man advantage and failed to score.
Linmark opened the scoring for the Badgers in the second on a tip-in following a shot by Palodichuk. Notre Dame tied the game at 1 early in the 3rd.
The same two teams will play again this afternoon at 4:00. There will be no coverage of this one on WSAU due to Badger men’s basketball against Nebraska.
Meanwhile the women hosted Merrimack College of Massachusets in a non-conference tilt at LaBahn Arena. The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead but that lasted all of twelve seconds before Lacey Eden leveled the score. Laila Edwards followed that up three minutes later with a tally of her own to put Wisconsin on top, a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 6-1 victory.
Edwards and Eden both recorded two goals in the win. Cassie Hall added a goal and an assist.
Katie Kotlowski tallied three assists and Casey O’Brien added a pair of helpers.
Jane Gervais made 17 saves in the win. Wisconsin and Merrimack will play again this afternoon in what will be the final non-conference game for the Badgers this season. They dive back into WCHA play next weekend against St. Thomas.
