GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – As the Packers prepare to travel to Dallas to face off against the Cowboys in their Wild Card playoff matchup, they may be without their top wide receiver.
According to head coach Matt LaFleur, the team knew on Friday that Christian Watson was not going to play against the Chicago Bears but instead told the media that it was just a “rest day” in hopes of affecting Chicago’s defensive game plan.
“He just wasn’t ready to play. I know it’s been extremely frustrating for him. I had a pretty good indication that it was probably trending that way—a little gamesmanship on my part. Sorry to lie to everybody,” LaFleur said after Sunday’s win.
Watson has now missed five straight and eight total games this season due to hamstring injuries. However, Watson’s injuries have not affected quarterback Jordan Love’s performance, as he finished the regular season with 4,159 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns, making him only the third quarterback in NFL history with those numbers in their first season, joining Kurt Warner and Patrick Mahomes.
When LaFleur was asked on Monday if Watson would be ready to go by Sunday, he said, “It’s one of those things; I know it’s frustrating. We’ll see where he’s at this week. I definitely wouldn’t rule him out, but I don’t know. A lot of it comes down to the ‘feel’ of it for him. That’s certainly something we’re going to have to tackle this offseason.”
The Packers will release their first injury report of the week after practice on Wednesday and their final report on Friday afternoon.
