WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Last weekend’s snow has allowed some Marathon County Winter recreation Areas to open for business, though conditions in those areas are not quite ideal.
A portion of the snowmobile trails in Zone 1 from County Highway J going East into Shawano County were opened Tuesday morning. However, parks officials note that no other trails are open, meaning snowmobilers should use designated park-and-ride areas to access the trails.
That includes the Mountain Bay Trailhead at 223200 Abt Rd. in Ringle. Users are asked to avoid parking at the Highland Community Church or The Store south of County Road J along the Mountain Bay Trail.
No other snowmobile trails are open in Marathon County.
Cross-country skiers and Snowshoers will get access to the Nine Mile Park trails on Wednesday. Conditions on those trails are fair, and users should be careful of thin snow in areas and branches that are bending or falling from recent winds.
Sylvan Hill, the city and county-run tubing hill, briefly opened in late December but was immediately closed due to warm conditions. It reopened to tubers last week.
