MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – As the Milwaukee Public School system asks for a new $252 million referendum this spring, a leaked memo shows that district staff has received training on how to “decanter whiteness” in the classroom.
According to the Young America’s Foundation, which published the 33-page memo given to district staff titled “Educational Community and District Climate,” it is meant to explain the “best practices addressing discipline disproportionality through a positive educational community.”
One section of the leaked memo titled “Understanding Whiteness” reads, “Whiteness is everywhere around us. Educational practices have been rooted in Whiteness and coming from a lens of Whiteness for years. Educators should reflect on which elements of Whiteness they see in education, which they participate in, and which elements they can work to dismantle.”
The memo also instructed staff to avoid “I don’t see race” or “I treat everyone equally” mindsets and provided a chart titled “Stages of White Racial Identity Development” that provides staff with six steps on how to become “anti-racist” with links that include a video titled “Whiteness WTF: White Privilege and the Invisible Race.”
Further, the memo states the district’s goal continues to be achieving “equity” in the schools by distributing tax-payer-funded district resources based on race, saying, “Achieving equity may require an unequal distribution of resources and services in order to ensure that all children have an equal opportunity to a free and appropriate public education.”
Milwaukee Public Schools was contacted by Fox News Digital for a comment, and they have not responded at this time.
