WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Opening statements have wrapped up in the homicide trial of Umberto Lo, with the defense asking for a mistrial on a technicality during Tuesday’s proceedings.
WAOW TV reports that Lo’s defense called for a mistrial after the state argued that Lo had been angry with the victim, Mai Ru Vang, and suspicious that she was cheating on him for years. Attorney Kate Frigo Drury said that statement violated the terms of last week’s agreement which saw Lo plead guilty to bail jumping in exchange for no references to his past actions, including his criminal history.
Judge LaMont Jacobson rejected that call.
Court records show seven witnesses were called on the first full day of the trial.
The case is scheduled to wrap by next Wednesday, January 31st. Should Lo be found guilty he would face a mandatory life sentence with only the possibility of parole to be decided by the Judge.
