GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers, under Matt LaFleur, will start the 2024 offseason with a major defensive overhaul.
The Packers decided that Joe Barry would not be returning for the upcoming season as the defensive coordinator, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Between 2021 and 2023, Barry, who succeeded Mike Pettine, held the position for three years. Although the Packers’ defense had some outstanding runs and even placed in the top 10 for scoring in 2023, the previous three seasons saw the team struggle with inconsistency.
Barry’s team was headed in the wrong way because the Packers’ defense finished 27th by DVOA (Defensive-Adjusted Value Over Average) in 2023, 25th in 2022, and 12th in 2021.
The Packers are expected to begin interviews in the coming days which may include Dallas Cowboys Defensive Backs coach Al Harris, former New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Wink Martindale, former Tennessee Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel, and former Badgers Interim Head Coach Jim Leonard.
