MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Wisconsin Republicans held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to lay out a revised version of Gov. Tony Evers voting district maps.
Speaker Robin Vos stated that Republicans believe Evers’s proposal is meant to provide Democrats with an unfair advantage come November, saying, “Surgical nature that was done that was certainly done to accommodate Democrat candidates. Now we think they probably went out and identified people to run in those seats, and they’ve most likely already contacted the governor or the DPW, so this is all part of a long-range political plan.”
Vos was joined by several Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Pat Snyder, who would be phased out of their districts under Evers’s proposal. In some cases, the proposed maps would change the representative’s district by a matter of just a few feet, and several indicated that they’d be willing to move to stay in their current district.
Vos, Snyder, and others introduced their changes at a news conference early Wednesday afternoon. The maps went directly to the Assembly floor for a vote at about 1:50 PM where they passed 63-35. As the vote was being taken, Governor Tony Evers hosted a roundtable discussion in Wausau with various women’s healthcare providers.
WSAU News Director Mike Leischer gave Evers the result of the vote, and the Governor wasted no time promising a veto. “No, I won’t sign it,” said Evers. “The only one I will sign is my maps. Those are not my maps.”
Leischner then asked if the maps were “dead in the water.” Evers responded with a quick “yes.”
This latest proposal comes after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in a 4-3 vote back in December that the Republican-drawn maps were unconstitutional due to the districts not physically touching one another.
