WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Marathon County jury has found Umberto Lo guilty of first-degree intentional homicide.
The jury deliberated for less than 2 hours before returning the verdict on Friday. Court records show that closing arguments began at about 9:30 AM, and the jury was sent to deliberate at about 11 AM.
The verdict was read at 12:26 PM.
Lo shot his ex, Mai Rue Vang, following an argument at her Wausau home in the spring of 2021. Family members say the couple had been in a violent relationship, and she had recently taken out a restraining order against him.
The couple did have children together, who were not harmed in the shooting.
Lo, 27, will face a mandatory life sentence with only the possibility of parole to be discussed. A presentence investigation will be completed by March 8th, with sentencing scheduled for the afternoon of May 6th.
The trial had been scheduled to run through January 31st but wrapped up in just five days. Jury selection was completed on Monday, the defense spent much of Tuesday and Wednesday building its case, and Lo’s defense team presented just three witnesses while building their case on Thursday.
