WESTON, WI (WSAU) — New Weston Administrator Jami Gebert was joined by Development and Planning Director Jennifer Higgins and Public Works Director Michael Wodalski this week.
Gebert says she was attracted to the job because of the village’s growth potential, which isn’t slowing down. That’s especially true in the western part of the community where Amazon is finishing a new distribution center near Highway 29.
“It is bringing in some jobs. But we should see some other things happen along that corridor,” said Higgins. “[Things] we probably wouldn’t have seen without them coming. That means future development there as soon as they open up.”
She says much of that will come from added traffic in the area, meaning quick-stop type businesses are possible along with other larger employers.
“There is space for that kind of development. We are actually looking at our future land use maps, looking at maybe a mix of retail and industrial that would come along with a distribution center,” said Higgins.
Higgins adds from the outside the project looks nearly complete. Crews took advantage of the weather to get most of the outside work done. They are now working on the inside of the building.
The facility will serve as a “last mile” distribution center. Meaning they won’t package and ship orders. Instead, completed orders will be taken to the facility after they are packaged and shipped. They’ll move from trucks to distribution vans, which will take them to their final destination.
Gebert came to Weston about three months ago after serving as Administrator in the Town of Rome. She also held jobs in local government in Stevens Point with both the city and the county. Despite her history serving in Rome, which hosts the Sand Valley golf resort, she admits that she is no expert in the game.
“I would not say that my game is excellent. Michael [Wodalski] could give me lots of pointers,” she said.
The group also discussed the Village’s fight against PFAS contamination in its drinking water wells with Wodalski. Hear more about that in the above video.
