WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man who was facing attempted homicide charges in Wood County will have the case dismissed without prejudice.
Christopher Stevens was in court on Tuesday where prosecutors asked a Judge to dismiss the case because they’ve lost contact with the victim. Court records indicate that the same issue presented itself during a hearing last October
At that time Stevens’ bond was converted to a signature bond and the case was scheduled for a 90-day status update. Stevens had been free on a $75,000 cash bond before then.
The case was connected to an altercation that occurred outside a Motel 6 in Wisconsin Rapids. That’s where police found a man face down in the parking lot, bleeding from his head. Doctors said he had been shot, and Stevens was named as the primary suspect. Though Stevens, who was 17 at the time of the incident, said he was attacked by the man and had struck the victim in the head with the gun in self-defense.
Having the charges dismissed without prejudice allows the charges to be refiled at a future date. But for now, the court proceedings are over. The move does not clear Stevens, he remains a suspect and could find himself back in court if the charges are refiled.
