WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, was the subject of two articles of impeachment authorized by the House Homeland Security Committee late on Tuesday night.
The Post Millennial reports that with the party line vote taken, the House may have a floor vote to remove Biden’s contentious official as soon as next week. If it is successful, it would mark the first impeachment of a Cabinet secretary since 1876.
According to the articles of impeachment, Mayorkas has “repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security” and has “made false statements to Congress” claiming that DHS is in operational control of the border and that the border is closed and secure.
Committee Chairman Mark Green spoke about the vote, saying, “Today is a grave day. We have not approached this day or this process lightly. Secretary Mayorkas’ actions have forced our hand. We cannot allow this border crisis to continue.”
Mayorkas stated in a letter attempting to defend his record before the vote took place, “I assure you that your false accusations do not rattle me and do not divert me from the law enforcement and broader public service mission to which I have devoted most of my career and to which I remain devoted.”
According to CBP (Customs & Border Patrol), in December, total nationwide encounters reached a record of 371,036, passing the previous monthly record set only a couple of months prior in September. In just the first three months of fiscal year 2023, nearly one million illegal aliens were encountered at the southern border, and the figures do not include thousands of ‘getaways’ who are known to have entered but evaded law enforcement.
