GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — The Green Bay Packers have found their next defensive coordinator. ESPN reports Jeff Hafley is expected to become the new DC in Green Bay.
The Boston College head coach went 22-and-26 in four seasons with the Eagles. He brought the school to bowl eligibility in three of those seasons, culminating in a win over Number-22 SMU in the Fenway Bowl this year.
According to Packers Wire, Hafley began his NFL coaching career with Tampa Bay in 2012 as an assistant defensive backs coach. He was later promoted to defensive backs coach in 2013. Hafley would also coach the same position for the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and 2015, and then the San Francisco 49ers from 2016 to 2018.
Boston College had a strong season in 2021, finishing third in passing yards, but finished 74th in points per game allowed and 64th in total yards per game in 2023. In terms of total defense during the 2021 season, red zone defense, first downs allowed, third down rate, team passing efficiency, and defensive touchdowns, the defense finished in the top 30 nationally that same year.
Hafley will replace Joe Barry, who was fired after the Packers’ playoff push. He’ll be the third different defensive coordinator under head coach Matt LaFleur, who’s entering his sixth season in Green Bay.
