WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – President Joe Biden announced on Monday night during a speech in Nevada that supports allowing abortion procedures “through three trimesters” causing a stir across the country.
During his speech, the President stated, “I love how Trump is saying Biden is for abortion on demand. Not true. That’s not what Roe v. Wade said. It said the three trimesters… Trump and his MAGA friends are dividing us, not uniting us.”
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, during the third trimester, the developing brain, kidneys, and lungs of fetuses continue, and the child will be able to suck its thumb and cry.
State-by-state variations now exist in abortion legislation following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022; some prohibit the operation except in specific situations, such as rape or the mother’s health, while other states permit abortions up until fetal viability.
Wisconsin Republican lawmakers introduced legislation in January that would ban the procedure after 14 weeks. The bill calls for a statewide referendum to be held in April to determine whether the 14-week ban should go into effect. Incest and rape cases would not be subject to the deadline.
If voters were to support the referendum, the ban would go into effect the day after the results are certified.
The President’s statement comes abortion continues one of the main issues he has an advantage over former President Trump on. According to NBC News, voters currently support Biden on the issue of abortion over Trump by 12 points. However, Trump held large leads on the issues voters told NBC News were their top reasons to vote in 2024 such as a 22-point lead on the economy and a 35-point on border security.
